Her appointment came a few days after Alan Kyeremanten, the trade minister, offered a letter of resignation to President Nana Akufo-Addo in protest of his intention to run for the NPP’s flag bearer position.

Although the reason for his resignation is unknown, he had been working in the Trade Ministry since 2017, and it is thought that he made the move to better focus on his presidential aspirations.

On January 10, 2023, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture, formally resigned.

He resigned, according to sources, in order to concentrate on his desire to become president and lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the general elections in 2024.
