Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Ghana’s Environment Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, has encouraged the government to prohibit the use of plastic in food packaging.

At the national launch of the Plastic Waste Management Campaign at Abetifi in the Eastern Region, he gave this advice.

The Minister emphasized how dangerous this practice is to the typical person’s health.

“Occasionally, the binding substance seeps into our bodies and disrupts internal functions. As a physician, I am well aware of this. If you’re a woman, the plastic chemical composite shape is similar to that of your hormones, which can cause problems with your monthly cycle,” he explained.

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie also discussed the impact on male reproductive systems.

“It can also enter the system and interfere with Spermatogenises if you are a male.” Because it is chronic in nature, it occurs in modest increments, so you may not notice it.” – he noted.

To begin, the Minister encouraged MMDAs to prohibit kenkey merchants from wrapping kenkey in plastic before boiling.
