Was Patina Miller snubbed of an Emmy nomination for “Raising Kanan”?

The Emmys, which recognize excellence in television and the people who make it enjoyable, will be the next ceremony in the awards season.

Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary deserve special recognition for their huge wins at the 2022 nominations, but there was also fair share of disappointment in the shape of snubs and shut-outs. Power Book III: Raising Kanan on STARZ, with its outstanding lead performance by Broadway actress Patina Miller, stands out among the forgotten.

Sascha Penn, the showrunner, recently addressed the issue in a lengthy post on social media, making it quite apparent that he believes the Emmys erred by failing to recognize, in his words, “the best actress on TV right now.”

I salute each and every nominee for an Emmy. Penn wrote in his caption, “But I can’t help but remind out that the work being done on RAISING KANAN and shows like it, is likewise worthy of this kind of praise. And yet our cast continues unfairly disregarded by practically every awards organization.

The bold claim about Miller’s acting abilities is made later in his post, where he also criticizes the industry for not putting what it preaches into practice. He writes, “Am I biased? Oh, yeah.

I’m also not an idiot, though. The best actress on television right now is PATINA MILLER. Period. We hear a lot about progress in our profession, but these nominations show us just how far we still have to go. I wish I could just brush all of this off as “business as usual,” but I can’t. This is important. It does, in fact.

The “Lead Actress” nominees this year show some seriously strong competitors, including Laura Linney in Ozark and the predicted winner Zendaya for her powerful portrayal of teen drug addict Rue in HBO’s Euphoria. While Miller’s performance as ’90s NYC queen pen Raquel “Raq” Thomas will undoubtedly have you thinking it’s a biopic rather than fiction, the “Lead Actress” nominees this year show some seriously strong competitors.
